AXLE: Agency-driven eXplainable Learning Experiences Workshop
Reframing Explainability as a Design Challenge for Accountable, Equitable, and Agency-Supportive AI in Education.
Date: June 27-28, 2026 | Location: COEX Center, Seoul, Republic of Korea
Part of Festival of Learning 2026
Registration to the main event is required

Why attend AXLE?
AI systems increasingly shape assessment, feedback, and instruction in education, yet they introduce risks of opacity, bias, and erosion of professional judgment. The rise of LLMs and agentic AI makes this more urgent, as these tools can produce an appearance of transparency that doesn’t reflect their actual reasoning. This workshop argues for moving beyond post-hoc explanations toward explainability-by-design, treating transparency as a core design constraint shaped by stakeholder goals, decision rights, and educational values across the entire AI life cycle. Bringing together researchers from AIED, EDM, and L@S, we re-frame explainability as a socio-technical challenge central to accountability, equity, and human agency in education.

Goals and Objectives
In this workshop, we explore how educational AI can be co-designed to preserve meaningful human agency. In addition to specific explanation techniques, we target the conditions under which explainability contributes to responsible adoption. We aim to:
- Articulate an agency-oriented design perspective
- Connect technical transparency to educational practice
- Identify life cycle challenges of XAI in edcuation
- Promote interdisciplinary exchange between researchers, educators, and technologists
- Develop a cross-disciplinary research agenda

Expected Outcomes
The workshop is designed to produce community-driven outputs that extend beyond the event itself. Among those, we ait to dicsuss
- A conceptual framework if user-driven XAI in edcuation
- Concrete principles for maintaining educational stakeholder agency
- A research agenda addressing priority research directions
- Cross-community network to enable sustained connections on XAI in education topic researche across AIED, EDM, and L@S
